What to do during the day on a Northern Lights trip (Tromsø & Rovaniemi)

You've likely booked this trip around one thing: seeing the aurora. But it only comes out after dark, and only when the sky stays clear, so what fills the rest of your days? That's usually the real question once the northern lights part of the planning is done. Tromsø and Rovaniemi are both built to answer it well. Here's the full list for each, with prices in rupees, so the trip doesn't ride entirely on the sky cooperating.

The reframe

This isn't just an aurora trip

  • December: about four hours of soft daylight near the solstice.
  • September or March: closer to seven or eight hours.
  • Either way: the aurora only shows at night, and only when the clouds allow it.

Treat the daytime as an afterthought and you waste a big part of what you paid for. Here's everything worth doing once the light is up. When to go · How to get there

Norway

Tromsø beyond the aurora

Tromsø sits right on the fjords, with mountains rising straight out of the water. The weather here changes fast, sometimes within a single afternoon, and that catches most Indian travellers off guard. What actually worked for us: a waterproof, windproof outer jacket, snow- and water-repellent shoes, and layers underneath you can shed the moment the sun comes out. You'll want all three most days. Here's everything worth doing once you're out of the hotel.

A note on the two prices you'll see. The figure next to each activity is what a standard version of that tour costs, and it's the number our budget calculator uses. The booking widgets often show higher prices, because operators list premium versions that bundle in extras such as professional photos, meals, hotel pickup, smaller groups or longer itineraries. Neither number is wrong. Use ours to plan your budget, then pick the version you actually want when you book.

Water & wildlife

Arctic Fjord Cruise

🧳 We booked this
4 to 5 hours · standard tour from ₹12,800

A boat trip through the fjords surrounding Tromsø, often paired with fishing along the way. Expect open water framed by steep mountains covered in snow on both sides.

Our experienceWe were out for four hours and the weather ran through rain, sun, a storm, and snow, but none of that was actually the highlight. What stayed with us was the view itself: fjords rising straight up out of the strait, with the open Arctic Ocean beyond, at eye level from the deck. Photos flatten it. Being on the water is what makes the scale land.

Polaria, Arctic Experience Centre

🧳 We booked this
1 to 1.5 hours · entry about ₹4,000

An Arctic aquarium and exhibition centre right on the harbour, built around the theme of polar research and marine life.

Our experienceWe caught the bearded seals being fed here, and the species on display aren't ones you'll have seen at aquariums back home, since these are genuinely Arctic marine animals. Good one to keep in your back pocket for a morning that turns too cold or wet for anything outdoors.

Whale Watching

📋 We recommend this
3 to 4 hours · standard tour from ₹14,400 · seasonal, Oct to Jan

Boat trips head out toward Skjervøy and Kvaløya to find orcas and humpback whales feeding on herring. Sightings depend on where the herring shoals are that season, so it's worth asking your operator how the current season is running before you book.

Arctic Floating

📋 We recommend this
2 to 3 hours incl. transfer · entry about ₹14,000 (estimate)

You're zipped into a dry survival suit and float on your back right in the fjord, fully insulated from the cold water underneath you. Sounds strange on paper, but it's one of those activities people tend to remember more than the ones that look better on an itinerary.

Northern Lights Cruise

📋 We recommend this
3 to 5 hours, evening · entry about ₹16,000 (estimate)

This is an aurora hunt done by boat instead of by coach. It's worth booking only on nights when the forecast already looks clear, since a boat can't drive away from cloud cover the way a car can, so the odds of an actual sighting are lower than on a chase tour done by land. The cruise itself, sailing past dark fjords at night, still holds up even if the sky doesn't cooperate.

Snow & Sami culture

Reindeer Sledding & Sami Camp

📋 We recommend this
4 hours · standard tour from ₹18,500

Sledding behind reindeer, feeding them afterward, and usually a Sami guide talking through the culture and history around a fire. A warm drink and a meal are typically included. Like dog sledding, slots for this go fast in high season, so book as soon as your dates are fixed rather than waiting till you land.

Dog Sledding

📋 We recommend this
3 to 4 hours · standard tour from ₹21,000

Ride behind a team of huskies, or drive the sled yourself on some tours, through the snow outside the city. It's one of the most popular activities in Tromsø and tends to sell out weeks ahead in peak season, so book early.

Snowmobile Safari

📋 We recommend this
3 to 4 hours, often evening · entry about ₹19,000 (estimate)

A guided ride through backcountry terrain outside the city, sometimes timed for the evening in case the aurora shows up along the way. No prior experience is needed, and guides lead in small groups.

Day trips

Sommarøy & Kvaløya Day Trip

📋 We recommend this
Half day, about 1.5 hours each way · entry about ₹12,000 (estimate)

A scenic drive out to the islands west of Tromsø, past fjords and small fishing villages, usually with a stop for a coastal picnic. Sommarøy's white sand beaches look almost tropical, until you notice the snow on the hills right behind them.

Senja Day Trip

📋 We recommend this
Full day · entry about ₹25,000 to ₹30,000

Senja is reachable along Norway's National Scenic Route, with ferry crossings and repeated photo stops along dramatic coastal cliffs. It can be driven yourself, or booked as a guided day tour from Tromsø, which is the easier option for most Indian travellers and where the cost above comes from.

Museums, views & relax

Honest opinion: most of these museums are built for tourists, and they're fine as a backup for a morning that's too cold or wet to be outside. But if you're someone who'd rather be out in the landscape than indoors reading placards, skip a couple of these and put that time into a day trip or just a picnic somewhere with a view instead.

Fjellheisen Cable Car

📋 We recommend this
About 1 hour · entry about ₹6,000 return

A cable car up Storsteinen for a view over the city and the fjord. It also happens to be one of the better aurora vantage points on a clear night, since you're already above most of the city's lights.

Polar Museum

📋 We recommend this
About 1 hour · entry about ₹1,050

Housed in a restored harbourside warehouse, covering the history of Arctic polar expeditions and hunting. It gets mixed up with Polaria often, but the two are different: this one is history, Polaria is the aquarium.

Troll Museum

📋 We recommend this
About 1 hour · entry about ₹1,900

Norway's only museum dedicated to trolls and folklore, built around augmented reality exhibits. It's a small, indoor way to spend an hour if the weather turns, and it works as well for couples as it does for families.

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum

📋 We recommend this
About 1 hour · entry about ₹1,100 (NOK 110)

The regional art museum for Northern Norway, with a small permanent collection of Sami and Arctic themed work spread over three floors, plus a rotating exhibition. A good indoor hour if the weather turns.

Sauna Experience

📋 We recommend this
1 to 1.5 hours · entry about ₹4,500 (estimate)

A floating sauna on the water, usually paired with a quick, bracing dip in the fjord before warming back up. Several operators run these right from the harbour.

Landmarks worth a photo stop

Gateway to the Arctic

🧳 We booked this
A few minutes · free

A harbourfront landmark marking Tromsø's entry point to the Arctic. Worth a quick photo stop on your way to or from the harbour.

Our experienceWorth the detour, not just a walk-past. This is one of those spots where it actually registers that you're standing in the Arctic.

Arctic Cathedral

🧳 We booked this
A few minutes outside · free · entry about ₹480 to enter

The striking triangular architecture is free to view and photograph from outside. Going in for a closer look costs a small entry fee.

Our experienceSame as Gateway to the Arctic, worth the stop. It's a quick one, but it's one of the few landmarks that actually feels like a highlight rather than a box to tick.

💚 Also free in Tromsø

  • Prestvannet Lake: a quiet lake near the city centre, good for a short walk, especially scenic once it freezes over.
  • Telegrafbukta: a waterfront park a little out of the centre, quieter than the harbour, with a nice walk and a view back toward the city.
  • Arctic Alpine Botanic Garden: the world's northernmost botanical garden, free to enter, though it sits under snow and is best skipped if you're travelling in the depths of winter.
  • Tromsø Public Library: a striking modern building right on the harbour, warm and quiet, and a good free stop if the weather turns.
Finland

Rovaniemi & Lapland beyond the aurora

📋 We recommend this. We haven't done this leg ourselves yet.

Rovaniemi sits inland, surrounded by flat boreal forest, and carries a very different identity: this is Santa Claus's official hometown, and the whole city leans into it. Split below into what's inside Rovaniemi itself, and what needs a short drive out.

In Rovaniemi city

Santa Claus Village & Arctic Circle Crossing

📋 We recommend this
2 to 3 hours · village entry free · meeting Santa free

Crossing the official Arctic Circle line, getting the crossing certificate, and meeting Santa himself are all completely free. If you want anything more, a professional photo package with Santa usually starts around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000, and the separate Elf Hat Academy experience costs about ₹4,200 on its own.

Arktikum Museum

📋 We recommend this
1.5 to 2 hours · entry about ₹2,500

A science and history museum built around the Arctic, with a strong focus on Sámi culture and the science behind the northern lights. A solid option for a morning when it's too cold to be outside for long.

A short drive from Rovaniemi

Ranua Wildlife Park

📋 We recommend this
5 hours incl. transfer, about 80km away · standard tour from ₹12,000

An Arctic zoo with polar bears, snow leopards, and wolverines in large enclosures designed to feel close to their natural habitat. It's about an hour's drive each way, and most tours include the transfer.

Husky Safari

📋 We recommend this
1 to 3 hours · entry about ₹15,000 to ₹20,000

Short husky rides are available right in Santa Claus Village, and longer safaris that you drive yourself run from resorts just outside the city. The longer version costs more, but you're actually driving the sled for a meaningful stretch instead of a five-minute loop.

Reindeer Sledding

📋 We recommend this
2 to 3 hours · entry about ₹10,000 to ₹20,000

Reindeer farms just outside Rovaniemi tend to offer more sled time than the short version inside the village, along with a closer look at how the animals are kept and herded.

Snowmobile Safari

📋 We recommend this
3 to 4 hours, often evening · entry about ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 (estimate)

A guided snowmobile ride through the forest outside the city, sometimes bundled with a campfire stop or a reindeer visit. Two people can usually share one snowmobile, with the option to drive solo at extra cost.

Icebreaker Cruise with Ice Floating

📋 We recommend this
3 to 8.5 hours incl. transfer · entry about ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 (estimate)

A cruise aboard a real icebreaker ship, followed by floating in a survival suit that covers your whole body, right in the water it just broke through. It's a longer day than most other activities on this list and priced accordingly, worth treating as a splurge rather than a default include.

Korouoma Canyon & Frozen Waterfalls

📋 We recommend this
Full day, about 1 hour drive each way · entry about ₹18,000 (estimate)

A hiking tour through a canyon lined with frozen waterfalls, usually with a campfire lunch included. It's a demanding walk on uneven, icy ground, so it suits reasonably fit travellers rather than being an easy extra day.

Sauna Experience

📋 We recommend this
1 to 1.5 hours · entry about ₹6,000 to ₹7,000

Many resorts around Rovaniemi build a proper sauna into the stay, and standalone sessions are also bookable if your own hotel doesn't have one. A good way to end a day spent outside in the cold.

💚 Free in Lapland

  • Santa Claus Village entry and meeting Santa: completely free, including crossing the Arctic Circle line and the certificate.
  • University of Lapland grounds: open to walk through, with some public art worth seeing.
  • Lordi's Square: a small square in the city centre, popular for a quick photo stop.
  • Rovaniemen Kirkko (Rovaniemi Church): open to visit, a quiet contrast to the rest of the city's Christmas branding.

Questions we get asked

FAQ

Is there enough to do in Tromsø during the day in winter?

Yes, easily. Fjord cruises, whale watching, reindeer and dog sledding, and museums such as Polaria and the Polar Museum are enough to fill whatever daylight hours you get, whether that's four hours in December or eight in March.

What's the real difference between Tromsø and Rovaniemi for a Northern Lights trip?

Tromsø sits on the coast among fjords and mountains, with a milder, more changeable climate. Rovaniemi sits inland in flat boreal forest, colder but steadier, and built around Santa Claus and a full snow landscape. Beyond the scenery, the right pick usually comes down to your dates, your budget, and who's travelling with you, which is exactly what our planning call above helps sort out.

Can you do both Tromsø and Rovaniemi in one trip?

It's possible but tight. There's no direct train or short flight between them, so it usually means routing through Oslo or Helsinki. Most trips are better served picking one as the anchor unless you've 10 or more days.

Is Rovaniemi only good for families, or does it work for couples too?

It leans family and Christmas themed, but couples can skip the extras aimed at children and still get husky safaris, reindeer farms, and the Arctic Circle crossing, all of which work fine without children.

How many extra days should I budget beyond the aurora itself?

At least two full daytime days on top of your aurora nights. That's enough for one bigger activity, such as a fjord cruise or Ranua, and one or two shorter ones, such as a museum or a cable car, without rushing.

Bottom line

Plan your days, not just your nights.

The aurora is only ever a few hours of your trip, and never a guaranteed one. Everything above is what fills the rest, whichever base you choose. Use the calculator to see what your version costs, and if you're still torn between Tromsø and Rovaniemi, that's exactly what the planning call above is for.
